Sport HistoryAthletics Read moreAthletics CloseAthletics is a major sport for the boys and is one of the most successful sports in the summer term. Students in years 9 and 10 compete in both the local Knight Frank and District Championships as well as in the ESAA Track and Field Cup. Training occurs every Friday after school at TVAC and is perfect opportunity to give any event a try. In recent years the school has won all local athletics competitions and will regularly qualify for the ESAA Track and Field Cup final, ranking the school in the top 12 on the country. In addition to this, year in and year out, the school produces athletes that go on to represent Berkshire and gain medals at the English Schools, a stepping stone event for many international athletes. The high achievement and success of TWBS athletics over recent years has really been highlight with some incredible performances and representative honours for past pupils. With several boys each year without fail reaching English Schools qualification while still pupils it is incredibly pleasing to see that so many of these boys and then staying committed to their sport and pushing themselves to compete at the very highest level. Taylor Campbell (Hammer) – Team England, 2018 Commonwealth Games Cricket Read moreCricket CloseCricket is played by all year groups in the summer term. The school enters into the Berkshire league at U14 and U15 as well playing a number of friendly games against our local state and private school rivals. At senior level, due to the pressures of A-Level and GCSE exams the school only runs one team but the main focus of the fixtures is play within the ‘spirit of cricket’. Our pinnacle annual fixture takes place against MCC and is a highlight on the sporting calendar. Football Read moreFootball CloseFootball at The Windsor Boys’ School runs across two terms competing in County, District and National Cup competitions as well as ‘friendly’ fixtures against our local rival schools. Junior Football runs two teams in Year 9 and two teams in Year 10. Senior football boasts a 1st and 2nd XI as well as an Under 16 team. At Windsor Boys’ School the primary concern is for young footballers to enjoy the game and to be able to play without fear. The school’s success is down to excellent team spirit and a philosophy that involves encouraging skill, attacking play and creativity. The boys are encouraged to ‘want the ball’ and to play with intelligence. Rowing Read moreRowing CloseRowing is the school’s flagship sport which is incredibly rare for a state comprehensive school. Despite the school’s status it is blessed with a host of national champions, and international representatives as well as host of well qualified and dedicated coaches. All of the boys at the school are given the opportunity to row. They start in year 9 with a simple capsize drill and swim test before developing their sculling skills on the River Thames throughout the whole of year 9 and 10. Racing comes thick and fast in the summer and the aim is to get as many boys as possible up to a racing standard. Gym sessions from 7am during the winter and early morning sessions on the river during the summer months mean that the boys’ skills develop quickly. As boys move into year 11, the training increases and the targets get higher with representational honors on the cards. The system at Windsor Boys‘ is progressive, and hopefully by the time boys reach the 6th Form their skills will be highly proficient, and with a really good understanding of what it takes to perform to a high level as an athlete. For those who don‘t quite make the lofty heights of representing their country there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy the benefits of being a rower, including a very active racing program across all the year groups, and of course all the health benefits that come with a high level of fitness. Rugby Union Read moreRugby Union CloseRugby is one of our leading sports at the school and we are blessed with experienced and knowledgeable coaches, who have played at the highest level. Throughout the autumn term, the school will run 7 teams across all years with over 250 boys representing the school on a Saturday morning. As well as our traditional fixtures against local grammar and private schools, we also enter teams into the National Schools Vase competition U18 and U15, as well as the County Cup. In the spring term we continue our rugby, in the shortened version of the game (7’s) and enter competitions that we have great success at. Our home games take place at Stovell sports field where we have the capability to host three rugby games at any one time. |
